Pediatric Asthma Program

Asthma is the number one childhood disease that sends kids to the hospital and to the emergency department. It is also the leading cause of school absences. With proper management, however, asthma can be controlled and children can lead active, healthy lives. See our online handbook for more information about management of asthma in children.

Our highly successful Pediatric Asthma Service helps children with asthma from birth through 17 years of age and their families. The program teaches children, parents and teachers how to recognize asthma symptoms and how to avoid acute episodes that may send a child to the emergency department. In four years of operation in Pitt County, this program has led to a significant decline in the number of school absences, hospitalizations and visits to emergency departments due to acute asthma episodes.

The team of caregivers includes a registered nurse, a respiratory therapist and a social worker. The team provides case management, education and follow-up services in cooperation with the child’s primary care provider.

Services
The program provides services ranging from education to intensive case management. Pediatric Asthma Services receives referrals from physicians, school nurses and from admissions personnel in hositals and emergency departments.
